Huawei’s Mate line is highly anticipated each year as it generally brings together the best the company can create. We’ve been talking about the device since July of this year when we published an exclusive that revealed the hardware specs of the new smartphone. October has been a big month for smartphone releases as it seemed there was a new major device to be launched every single week. The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro launch took place a couple of weeks ago and is still being talked about today. We’ve known the software would include a feature called Underwater Mode and now the company has released the case that goes along with this feature.
We had first learned about this software feature, Underwater Mode, a couple of months ago when an XDA team member began digging through the camera application. As we performed the APK teardown, we noticed a feature labeled ‘Underwater’ as part of the application’s capture mode. After going through the firmware we even found what resembled a smartphone in some sort of bag. Putting 2 and 2 together, we began to speculate that Huawei had plans for some sort of accessory that would let you use its camera underwater.
The image we originally found.
The company has put a lot of focus on the camera performance of the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro so it makes sense that they would like for people to use it wherever they wanted. Even underwater. Today, the company has officially revealed the accessory that we reported back then. While the original image we found makes it look like it was just some sort of bag, the actual product is a water-resistant bag. The Mate 20 Pro itself has an IP rating of 68 which means that it can withstand depths of up to 1.5 meters of water for as long as 30 minutes.
There isn’t any consumer product that is completely waterproof, but this case will let you use the Huawei Mate 20 Pro deeper underwater and for longer periods of time if you’d like. The case lets you slide the device inside it and then you’re given a raised physical button that allows you to operate the camera while you’re in the water. The device is being sold at a price of 599 yuan (which converts to around $86 at current conversion rates).

When I am passionate about something, I go all in and thrive on having my finger on the pulse of what is happening in that industry. This has transitioned over the years from PCs and video games, but for close to a decade now all of my attention has gone toward smartphones and Android.
